You may have heard of the new social media app, Clubhouse, and wondered what all the excitement is about and if it could be useful to your marketing strategy. According to the article by Michael Stelzner on the Social Media Examiner, about one million people are currently on the app - so let's take a look!

What is the Clubhouse app?

The Clubhouse app provides people around the world with an audio-only platform to discuss all different types of topics they might be fascinated by. From niche interests to news in all different types of industries, the Clubhouse app has a conversation for everyone. By joining one of the thousands of rooms available you can listen to experts in any industry - like listening in on a phone call.

It seems simple, but there is one small catch. At this point in time, you need to be invited to join the Clubhouse app. Its release to the iOS platform was in March of 2020, so it is still very new. As a member of the Clubhouse app, I have experienced some glitches that will hopefully be ironed out as more people join Clubhouse.

What can I do on the app?

Once you join the app you can follow anyone you might want to hear from, which includes a wide range of celebrities and industry experts like Elon Musk and Kevin Hart! Each of the clubhouse members can create a room and invite people to speak. If you join a room as a listener and would like to speak, you can raise your hand, but your request must be accepted by the moderator. If accepted, you may join the panelists who all have speaking abilities.

You can also follow different clubs to get notifications of related discussions. Anyone who is a member of the club can create a discussion room for the club members and followers.

Should I be on the Clubhouse app as a Marketer?

Absolutely! Although I personally feel that Clubhouse requires improvements before it could blow up to the level of some of our favorite platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter, it offers live advice from industry experts. It is also a really unique opportunity to study a social media app in the process of development and to follow it through to its success or failure.

Should I incorporate the Clubhouse app into my marketing strategy?

At this stage of development, the Clubhouse app may be more beneficial to a company that looks to drive innovation and change. There are a significant number of followers, but nothing close to the number of people on the most popular platforms out there. It may be a little risky at this point to make an investment in this app; however, it is definitely worth following, and in my opinion - joining!

Hi Maddi! I am so glad you enjoyed my post! I just recently downloaded the app and haven't had the chance to listen to multiple full-length sessions yet. I followed a marketing club and am super excited to listen to some of their discussions. I also love learning about health and wellness, so I am really excited to listen to some of those! I do think it is really similar to a huge Zoom call, except it is more casual because nobody has a camera on and only some people have speaking abilities. I will be interested to see if the app continues to succeed!

Hi Becky!

Awesome post! I had never heard of Clubhouse before. Thank you so much for introducing it to me! I think my favorite part is that it is like a Ted Talk but more personal. I have a question for you regarding the app.You mentioned in the app that you are a member. What is your favorite session you have been to and why? How do you feel like this is different to zoom?

Thank you so much for your post!

Best,

Maddi
